Sigismund Epp (born December 31, 1647 in Sterzing , † July 23, 1720 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian theologian as well as procancellor and rector when the University of Innsbruck was founded .

Life

Sigismund Epp's parents Konrad and Susanna Epp came from Eichstätt and Dillingen , respectively , and his father was a customs collector in the service of the Augsburg bishops in Lurx near Sterzing. Sigismund studied theology at the University of Dillingen and received his doctorate in theology in 1675. In 1668 he received the minor orders, on April 1, 1673 he was ordained a priest in Augsburg .

In 1675 he received the professorship for controversial theology at the University of Innsbruck , which had been founded a few years earlier, and in 1681 he moved to the chair for Holy Scripture.

On November 18, 1680, the Bishop of Brixen Paulinus Mayr Epp appointed Prokanzler at the University of Innsbruck. As the permanent representative of the bishop, he should exercise the rights of the church within the university and celebrate the university services, which is considered the beginning of institutionalized university pastoral care. As Pro-Chancellor, Epp was an important figure in the founding phase of the university and had to ensure a balance between the Brixen bishop, the Jesuits and secular authorities. In 1688, with his significant participation, an agreement between the university and Bishop Johann Franz Khuen von Belasi was concluded, which reached an agreement on essential issues.

Epp was elected dean of the theological faculty twelve times and rector of the University of Innsbruck in 1692, 1696 and 1702. In 1703 he resigned from the teaching post and from the office of Prokanzler.

In 1678, Prince-Bishop Mayr appointed Epp as the fourth landscape chaplain at the Mariahilfkirche , which also served as a university church until 1720. In 1680 he was made a clergyman by the bishop , and in 1681 by Pope Innocent XI. appointed Apostolic Protonotary , in 1713 he was appointed archdean with great powers.

Together with his brother Maximilian, he donated an additional benefit at the Mariahilfkirche in 1696, which was endowed with 7,000 guilders and was supplemented by another benefit with 6,000 guilders in 1710.

In 1988, the kindergarten path behind the Mariahilfkirche was renamed Dr.-Sigismund-Epp-Weg .
