Sigurjon Brink

Sigurjón Brink (also Sjonni Brink ; born August 29, 1974 in Reykjavík ; † January 17, 2011 in Garðabær ) was an Icelandic musician and composer who also appeared as an actor and co-founded the theater group Vesturport .

life and work

Sigurjón Brink was the son of a musician who played guitar and sang in a band. He studied theater and singing and founded the grunge rock group In Bloom in 1994 , in which he played drums and for which he arranged the arrangements. The group released a single and an album in 1996. When it broke up, he switched to guitar and performed in a duo that covered songs by John Lennon and Paul McCartney . Soon after, he devoted himself to his solo career and co-founded the theater group Vesturport. In the group he met his future wife, the actress Þórunn Erna Clausen , a daughter of the athlete Haukur Clausen , while working together on the musical Le Sing in 2002 . Among other things, he appeared in Icelandic productions of the musicals Cuckoos Cabaret , Footloose and The Buddy Holly Story and was on the stage at Borgarleikhúsið .

His next band The Flavors released the album Go Your Own Way in 2004 , his solo album Sjonni Brink was released in 2009. Several times - 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010 - he took part in the Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins , the Icelandic preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest . He reached the final in 2010 with the song Waterslide .

For the Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins 2011 he wrote the song Coming Home (Icelandic title Aftur heim ) together with his wife Þórunn Erna Clausen . Twelve days before his appearance on the third semifinal show, Sigurjón Brink died of a cerebral haemorrhage at the age of 36; he left four children.

Six of his musician friends formed the group Sjonni's Friends with the participation of Þórunn Clausen and won the Icelandic preliminary round with the song. At the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Düsseldorf, the musicians came to the final with Coming Home and reached 20th place. Sigurjón Brink's widow Þórunn Erna Clausen wrote the winning song Our Choice for Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins 2018 , with which Ari Ólafsson performed at the Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon.
