The silver cod ( Gadiculus argenteus ) is a fish from the cod family (Gadidae) that is native to the north-east Atlantic and its neighboring seas . There are two subspecies , G. argenteus argenteus and G. argenteus thori .

features

The silver cod reaches a total length of about 10, maximum 15 cm. On the back it is pink to light brown, otherwise silvery in color. Its eyes are noticeably large, the mouth is on top and, unlike many other members of the family, has no goatee . There are three dorsal fins and two anal fins . The pelvic fin attachment is still in front of the pectoral fin attachment . All fins consist exclusively of soft rays . The lateral line runs continuously up to the middle of the rearmost dorsal fin, there are lateral line pits on the head. The maximum age of the fish is given as three years.

Distribution, habitat and way of life

The distribution area of G. a. argenteus extends over the shelf of the north-east Atlantic from Morocco to northern Spain as well as the western Mediterranean Sea , to the north adjoining it comes G. a. thori around the British Isles and along the Norwegian coast. The silver cod lives pelagically over sediment - like rocky floors. It is found at depths of several hundred meters, with the preferred water depth varying locally. For the northern Mediterranean it is given as 200 to 400 m. Hunting in larger schools, it feeds on invertebrates . In the Mediterranean, the spawning season falls in winter, in the north of the range it extends into spring.

Economical meaning

The silver cod is of little importance as a food fish ; it is only used as bait or in the production of fish meal . In some ways, however, it is important as food for various larger, more commercially important fish.
