The St. Georgen silver smelter is a listed former smelter in the Neustädtel district of Schneeberg in the Saxon Ore Mountains region . The hut belonged to the Schneeberger St. Georg mine. In it were silver ore melted.

history

The St. Georg mine built a silver smelter in Lindenauer Grund around 1500 . It was one of 13 huts in Schneeberg, and by 1519 it was the most important in the mining area . The house that still exists was built in 1665 as an electoral silver smelter because the first building was partially destroyed in a flood in 1573 .

description

The smelting works is located about three kilometers from the center of Schneeberg in the Lindenauer Grund in Neustädtel and sixty meters north of the Siebenschlehener Pochwerk . The hut building was built as a two-story half - timbered house. The two surrounding rooms, which are arranged one above the other, are a special detail . The building complex also included a residential and cation house as well as a cabbage house. In the hut there were melting and testing furnaces and a driving hearth as technical equipment.

The smelter was in operation until 1717. In 1710 the general smelting administration was founded in Freiberg . From this point on, the state iron and steel works were merged and the purchase of silver ore was concentrated in Freiberg on the orders of the elector. So the smelter in this building was only in operation for 50 years.

Today's use and conservation

The building was used as a residential building until the beginning of the 20th century. When the last resident died, the city of Schneeberg purchased the building in order to preserve it. An association founded in 2010 took over the building as part of a long-term lease and takes care of the renovation of the monument. When examining the two log rooms, the age of the wood could be dated to the year 1664.

The silver was smelted in brick shaft furnaces , as described by Georgius Agricola in De re metallica .
