Systematics

The following subspecies are distinguished in Europe:

  • Silene uniflora subsp. petraea (Hartm.) Jonsell & HCPrent. : It occurs in Sweden.
  • Silene uniflora subsp. thorei (Dufour) Jalas (Syn .: Silene thorei Dufour ), which occurs in northern Spain and western France and has broadly elliptical leaves that are not or barely blue-green
  • Silene uniflora subsp. uniflora , which occurs in the rest of the distribution area and has blue-green linear-lanceolate leaves

Occurrence

The cliff catcher occurs on the coasts of Western Europe from the Azores and Spain to Murmansk and in North Africa on beach rocks. The northern Baltic coast is also populated. The distribution is most dense in Iceland , where the species occurs all over the island.

nomenclature

The valid scientific name is Silene uniflora Roth from 1794. More recent synonyms are Silene maritima With. 1796 and Cucubalus littoralis Pers. (1805). The name Cucubalus alpinus Lam is even older . 1786. However, this cannot be combined with Silene alpina (Lam.) E. Thomas 1837, because the name Silene alpina was used by Pallas as early as 1776 for a different species. Other synonyms are Behen alpinus (Lam.) Gușul. , Behenantha uniflora (Roth) Ikonn. , Oberna alpina (Lam.) Ikonn. and Oberna uniflora (Roth) Ikonn.

use

The rock catcher is widely used as an ornamental plant in borders.
