The sillem bullfinch ( Carpodacus sillemi , syn .: Leucosticte sillemi ), formerly known as the sillem snow bullfinch , is a scarcely researched species of bird from the genus of the carfinch ( Carpodacus ) within the finch family .

description

The Sillemgimpel was long known only two specimens, an adult male and a newly fledged male, collected in September 1929 by the Dutch banker and ornithologist Jérôme Alexander Sillem (1902–1986) and scientifically described in 1992 by Cees S. Roselaar .

The adult male is 15 centimeters tall. The wing length is 128 mm, the tail length 67.5 mm, the beak length 14.3 mm and the barrel length 19.7 mm. The head and neck are bright, clay-yellow or a little lighter on the lower neck. The base around the beak is light yellow-brown. The top is gray-brown. Well worn plumage shows yellow-brown tips. The rump and upper tail-coverts are light yellow-white or washed-out gray. The tail is dark gray-brown and lined with light yellow-red in the fresh plumage. In the worn plumage, the edges are white. The upper wing-coverts are colored like the upper side. The base of the inner flags of the large arm covers and umbrella feathers is sometimes darker; the outer edges of the large arm covers are washed out in pink and cinnamon. The large hand covers and the thumb wing are dark gray-brown with black tips. The hand and arm wings are also dark gray-brown. The outer flags have a narrow, lighter gray border. The tips of the wings and inner wings are dirty white. The chin, chest and sides of the chest are light cinnamon buff. The rest of the underside is white with a light yellowish-leather-colored wash, which is strongest on the flanks. The under wing coverts and axillary feathers are white. The color of the beak is unknown.

Distribution, habitat, way of life and status

The two copies in 5,125 meters in the westtibetanischen Kushku-Maidan-plateau between the rivers Kalakashi He and Yarkant in the southwest of Uygur Autonomous Region Xinjiang after a storm in a swarm of Matt snow bullfinches discovered. The young bird's wings were not yet fully grown. In his notes from 1934, Sillem therefore suspected that the species either breeds near the type where it was found or near the peaks of the Kunlun Mountains. Nothing is known about the way of life. In June 2012, a specimen was photographed in the Yenigou Valley, western Qinghai Province , that was later identified as a female sillem bullfinch by experts including Professor Roselaar. The species is listed by BirdLife International in the category of insufficient data ( data deficient ).

Systematics

Until 2015 the Sillemgimpel was under the common name Sillem-Schneegimpel in the genus of the Schneegimpel ( Leucosticte ). A DNA sequence analysis supports the position in the genus Carpodacus , which was adopted by the International Ornithological Congress. In 2016 the common name was changed to Sillemgimpel.
