Silver is a 1999 originally for Windows posted action adventure of Infogrames . The player steers his character through a linear story, has to solve various puzzles and fight opponents. This was followed by ports to the Dreamcast game console and Mac OS .

action

In a fantasy realm, the eponymous ruler named Silver wants to marry a new bride. The king's subordinates have the task of capturing all the women in the country and they also end up with the wife of the main character, who seeks revenge and now goes into battle to free his wife. In the course of the plot it also turns out that Silver is also looking for an alliance with the demon Apocalypse to usurp world domination. The player must now find eight magical balls to repel the demons and overthrow tyranny.

Gameplay

The course of the game is shaped by the genre of adventure , role-playing and action-adventure. In contrast to role-playing games, the player has no way of creating their own character. Instead, the player follows the storyline with his main character and two companion characters. The playable characters are exclusively predefined and can only be rudimentarily equipped. Experience points are collected automatically, which adjusts your skill level to the stronger opponents in the course of the game. Healing is learned through food, spells and artifacts are usually obtained from defeated bosses.

The game world is quite linear, so that you mainly play the given storyline in the order given by the developer. The action part is very present in the game due to the numerous fights with hand weapons, long-range weapons or magic, but by far not the main playful element, such as B. Diablo . There are also practically no jump-'n'-run elements, as are typical for action adventures in the tradition of Tomb Raider . The option to save only exists at specified memory points.

history

development

The graphics engine of Silver is similar to an adventure the scenes of the event as a pre-rendered background scenery is, in which the characters are shown in polygonal calculated correct perspective. The pre-drawn images of a medieval fantasy world are logically strung together and enriched with optical and acoustic effects, such as rain. The background music composed by Dean Evans is partly thematic, so it changes in case of danger or in combat. The German voice output was recorded by the German voice actors for Hollywood stars Meg Ryan and Nicolas Cage .

Legacy

The developer provided support for the PC version until 2001: At the end of 1999 a patch called v1.09g was released, which solved problems at two game points, and in 2001 a last patch (called v2.0), which supports the Nvidia -Geforce - added graphics cards . After the end of official support, the community tried to fix any remaining bugs and incompatibilities, especially with newer operating systems and faster computers.

In May 2012, Silver was republished in Digital Distribution on GOG.com .

On June 25, 2013 it was announced that Nordic Games had acquired the trademark rights from the insolvent publisher Atari SA (formerly Infogrames).

Silver has been available digitally on the Steam gaming platform since 2018 .

According to the specialist magazine PC Joker , Silver is an on-screen adventure "that cleverly combines gripping battles with a beautiful fantasy story, easily solvable tasks and lots and lots of atmosphere." Despite the limited storage options and the "Japanophile look", the game also offers genre- A lot of fun for newbies. The test by Bravo Screenfun , however, states that the game is not for beginners in the action-adventure genre. The real-time battles are hellishly difficult, according to the author, and you can only save at certain points.

"For professionals, however, silver is a real challenge - good graphics and a great soundscape included."

- Volker Weitz : Bravo Screenfun

In the conclusion of the magazine Mega Fun on the Dreamcast version it is said that the game was already convincing on the PC. However, the console implementation is rather unfortunate and has weaknesses in both the controls and the graphics.
