Silvi Väljal

Silvi Väljal (born January 30, 1928 in Abja ; † April 3, 2014 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian children's author and book illustrator .

life and work

Silvi Väljal graduated from high school in Viljandi in 1946 and then studied from 1947 to 1952 at the Estonian Art Academy , from which she graduated as a graphic designer. She then worked as an artistic designer for five years in the editorial team of a youth magazine before setting up as a freelance artist and author.

Silvi Väljal illustrated numerous classics of Estonian children's literature such as Elar Kuus , Heljo Mänd , Iko Maran , Ellen Niit , Jüri Parijõgi , Silvia Rannamaa , Marta Sillaots , Venda Sõelsepp , Aino and Leida Tigane or Heino Väli . She only wrote one children's book herself, but it achieved unusual popularity and has been translated into over a dozen languages: Jussike's Seven Friends , in which a little boy in search of “Sunday Land” gets to know every seven days of the week.
