Heljo Mänd

Heljo Mänd (until 1934 Kleinmüller , until 1946 Raidla , born February 11, 1926 in Narva ) is an Estonian poet , prose writer and children's book author.

Life

Heljo Mänd studied from 1941 to 1946 at the Business Vocational School in Tallinn and from 1946 to 1947 at the Estonian Theater Institute, which has since merged into the Estonian Music Academy . From 1956 she worked in various magazine editorial offices. She has lived in Nõmme as a freelance writer since 1965 .

In 1946 she married the painter Roman Mänd (1915–1991); she is the mother of four children.

Heljo Mänd has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1961 .

Literary work

Heljo Mänd published her first poems under the name Raidla in 1946 in the Noorte Hääl newspaper . Her first children's poems appeared in 1954, and - encouraged by Ralf Parve - she soon put together her first book of poems for children, which came out in 1957. This ushered in a new era in Soviet children's literature, because instead of "teaching with the raised index finger, there was a diverse and multi-layered children's poetry."

The author then presented collections of poetry for children in quick succession, which were soon followed by prose texts for children and young people. Today she is one of the most productive children's book authors in Estonia. Criticism early on indicated that the author was "more memorable and fresher in her poetry than in her prose," and today her best books are seen particularly in the area of ​​poetry for younger preschoolers. However, critical voices are also present. The author is sometimes accused of "infantilization" or admitted that such a comprehensive work inevitably brings with it a certain imbalance.

For adults, the author has written both poetry and, to a greater extent, prose. Many of her prose works are on the verge of memoir literature, which is why a critic has described the genre as a "memory novel". Heljo Mänd has also translated numerous children's books from Russian into Estonian. Her work has also been translated into numerous foreign languages.
