Elar Kuus

Elar Kuus , actually Elmar Kuusik , pseudonym Elmar Ramla , (* 5 November . Jul / 17th November  1899 greg. Gut Keeri, Meeri , Tartu , † 6. November 1988 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian writer of children's books .

Life

Since his parents fled Estonia in the course of the 1905 revolution , Elar Kuus first went to school in the Russian hinterland. After returning to Estonia (1910) he attended various schools and graduated from the Hugo-Treffner-Gymnasium as an external student in 1925 . He then studied at the University of Tartu and graduated in history and economics in 1930. After that he lived in Viljandi for ten years , where he was a high school teacher. Before and afterwards he worked in schools in Narva-Jõesuu , Tartu and Tallinn, among others . From 1946 to 1949 he worked in various theaters in Tallinn before he was arrested and disappeared from 1950 to 1954 in the Narva prison camp .

After his release, he worked as a freelance writer and lived in Tallinn. Elar Kuus spoke Russian, French, German, English, Finnish and Esperanto and also translated children's literature, among others by Alexander Sergejewitsch Pushkin and Samuil Jakowlewitsch Marschak . He was married to the writer Aino Tigane .

Literary work

Elar Kuus' work is based primarily on the author's own youth experiences, as he wrote in an autobiographical text. It has a strong educational focus and propagates the importance of work and love for the home and parents. Political problems are not dealt with, however, the focus is on tension and a thirst for adventure. Elar Kuus has been described as a classic "boy author".

Translations

As part of the export efforts of Soviet cultural policy, some of Kuus's books have also been translated into foreign languages ​​in Estonia. So Päikese perekond on 1983 English under the title sand The dragon appeared in Tallinn, the same year in German under the title The World gazers coward musi came as The Bunny and her cabbage in 1981 in German out, also in English (1985), Polish (1986), Swedish (1986), Slovak (1987) and Czech (1987). All books were published in Tallinn.
