Silvia Otto

Silvia Otto (* 3. July 1931 , † 13. May 2009 ) was a German Basketball - referee . She was the first woman to whistle a game in the men's basketball league . After her retirement as a referee at the age of 50 in 1982, she was still active as a technical inspector at Bundesliga games until 1995 .

The only 1.63 m tall Otto was active as a player between 1948 and 1959 at ATV 1877 Düsseldorf and won ten West German championships with this club . Since 1974 she was active as a referee in the highest German leagues and was considered one of the most popular referees in the Bundesliga. From 1990 to 2006 she was President of the Women's Commission at the DBB . In 2006 Silvia Otto was honored with the DBB's Golden Badge of Honor for her services to basketball in Germany. In the same year there was a successor as referee in the men's Bundesliga with the former national player Petra Kremer .

Otto had been married since 1958 and had four children; her son Martin was active between 1988 and 1996 as a player for Godesberger TV , Galatasaray Cologne and TV Rhöndorf himself in the two highest German leagues. After his career ended because of knee problems, he was multiple German champions and cup winners with ASV Bonn in wheelchair basketball .
