Simon II

Simon II (* 1140 ; † April 1, 1206 ) was Duke of Lorraine from 1176 to 1206. He was the son of Duke Matthew I ( House Châtenois ), and Judith von Staufen (1123–1195), the sister of Kaiser Friedrich Barbarossa , who was also called Bertha von Schwaben.

He succeeded his father as duke in 1176, although his mother preferred his younger brother Friedrich . Simon therefore had to convene a meeting of the nobility that confirmed his rights, but also forced him to forego some privileges. In particular, the États de Lorraine were created, which took on the role of a parliament of the duchy. He gave the land of Bitsch to his brother Friedrich as a paragium , which was not enough for him. Friedrich revolted ; the war lasted three years and ended with a peace treaty concluded in Ribemont , with which Lorraine was effectively divided: Simon received the francophone South, Friedrich the German-speaking north.

Simon II's first marriage was Agnes von Veldenz, daughter of Gerlach I, Count von Veldenz ; his second wife was Ida von Vienne († 1224), daughter of Gerald I , Count of Mâcon and Vienne . Both marriages remained childless. He appointed his nephew Friedrich , the son of his brother of the same name, as his successor, although his brother survived him. In 1202 he ceded sovereignty over the county of Vaudémont to Theobald I , Count of Bar .
