Simon V. zur Lippe (* 1471 ; † 1536 ) was a nobleman and since 1528 Count zur Lippe . During his reign, the Reformation was introduced in Lippe .

Life

Simon V was the fifth child and the eldest son of Bernhard VII. "Bellicosus" and Anna von Holstein-Schauenburg and took over the government around 1511 after the death of his father. In 1528 he was given the title of imperial count and thus raised the previous rule of Lippe to one of around 140 imperial counties.

After the Reformation had gained more and more acceptance, first in Lemgo from 1518 , and then more and more in other cities, there was an open conflict in 1530 when Protestant hymns were sung during the Catholic Easter Mass. Simon, who remained a Catholic all his life, was angry and spoke of "rebellious peasants who do not want to tolerate any authorities over themselves". However, he was a vassal of two feudal lords: the Bishop of Paderborn and the Hessian Landgrave Philip, who had been Lutheran since 1524, and was therefore restricted in his freedom of action. The approach to the Lutheran creed was also favored by the strong position of the cities, especially Lippstadt and Lemgo, vis-à-vis the sovereign. Philip of Hesse admonished the citizens of Lemgo to give satisfaction to the sovereign, but from 1532 the Lutheran creed also spread in the other cities. When Simon V sought support for military intervention against Lemgo in 1533, Philip intervened as an intermediary. In the same year Lemgo took over the Brunswick church order and became officially Evangelical-Lutheran .

Simon V and Duke Johann III. von Kleve attacked Lippstadt, which had become Protestant in 1535 . The city capitulated to its sovereigns. In Lemgo, too, the fear of military action grew, but because of Philip's continued mediation, it did not materialize.
