Simon Freiherr von Eichthal (born August 11, 1787 in Leimen ; † August 28, 1854 in Munich ; born as Simon Aron Seligmann ) was a royal Bavarian court banker, royal Greek state councilor and co-founder of the first public limited company in Germany, Bayerische Mortgage und Wechselbank .

Life

Simon Aron, the youngest son of the Jewish court factor Aron Elias Seligmann , worked in his father's bank on Theatinerstrasse in Munich from the start and took it over after his death. The father and his children were raised to Baron von Eichthal by the grateful King Maximilian I Joseph in 1814 , and his sons gradually changed to the Catholic faith. Simon and his wife Julie converted to the Catholic faith in a solemn mass in 1816 in St. Michael , Berg am Laim . His father followed suit in 1819, his mother remained Jewish.

In 1832, Simon von Eichthal brokered a government loan of 60 million francs to Greece , which earned him the title of a royal Greek councilor . He became known as an entrepreneur and co-founder of Bayerische Hypotheken und Wechselbank . Baron Simon von Eichthal became the first director of the bank, which, in accordance with the statutes, took out fire and life insurance in addition to credit transactions. It is the first bank in Germany that was operated during the legal reform of the stock corporation . With this bank establishment, a well-funded collection point for private money was created in Bavaria for the first time, which had a favorable effect on agriculture, trade and the onset of industrialization. It became the model for the first wave of German bank foundations in 1848 and 1856. For his services as a court banker, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown . King Otto of Greece awarded him the Grand Commander's Cross of the Order of Savior in 1836 , and according to the tombstone he also carried the Russian Order of Saint Vladimir . In 1837 he took over the Pilgramsheim residence .

In 1854, shortly before his death, he set up a family foundation with 200,000 guilders, which gave his descendants, the Munich orphanage and the city hospital. This fortune was completely wiped out during the hyperinflation of 1923 .

The tomb of Simon and Julie of Eichthal is on the old southern cemetery in Munich (Old Arkadenplatz 4 at cemetery 25) location . Her son Karl Freiherr von Eichthal also became an important banker.
