Simone Schiaffino

Simone Schiaffino (born February 16, 1835 in Camogli , † May 15, 1860 in Calatafimi Segesta ) was an Italian freedom fighter and sailor .

Simone Schiaffino has been at sea since he was 12 years old. From 1856 he supported the Italian unification movement as a member of Masonic lodges in New York and Genoa . He took part in the second Italian War of Independence as a volunteer. Under Giuseppe Garibaldi he fought in 1859 a. a. in the battle of San Fermo . In 1860 he took part in the platoon of the thousand as commander . He died on May 15, 1860 at the Battle of Calatafimi .

After his death, he soon held a special place in the history of Italian Freemasonry and the Risorgimento . Streets, squares and ships were named after him.
