Sindal is a Danish town between Frederikshavn and Hjørring in the Vendsyssel region . Since the municipal reform of January 1st 2007 Sindal belongs to the Hjørring municipality in the region of Nordjylland . Before that, Sindal was the main town of the Sindal municipality in the Nordjyllands Amt . The place with 3057 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) is located on the river Uggerby Å and is known for its many fountains.

Fountains and water art

A program to beautify the city began in the 1990s with the 100 fountains project . In addition to many private facilities (over 120 fountains are registered), around 20 large and small works of art were set up in public spaces. With The 5 Hermen and The Entrusted Pounds by Niels Helledie, Nørre Torv is one of Denmark's largest water works of art. Peter Hentze's concrete water art consists of five concrete columns with 72 reliefs. The local artist Kirsten Jensen created Nilles balls , hand-made granite balls, and with Greetings from the past her greatest work of art to date: three granite columns with enclosed fossils.

Churches

The town church of Sindal ( Sindal Bykirke ) dates from 1910 and was renovated in 2007. The three sides of the choir were decorated in frescoes by Elof Risebye (1892–1961) in 1920–21 and were also restored in 2007. The church received the first organ with four registers in 1917. The new organ from 1978 comes from the organ building company Gunnar Fabricius in Husted, it has 16 registers, two manuals and a pedal.

The old church of Sindal ( Sindal Gamle Kirke ) is located on a hill on the eastern outskirts. The Romanesque church dates from 1200, the oldest parts from the 12th century. The older of the two bells in the separate tower was cast by Peder Lavridsen in 1566, the other is from 1696. The altarpiece is a Renaissance work by the Skagen painter Michael Ancher . The subject is a copy of Velasquez's painting The Crucifixion . The church was renovated in 1964 and received new stalls and an organ with 5 registers.

A Baptist church is located near the market square .

Attractions

The Højen-Bjørnager Landscape and Agriculture Museum is a “living” agricultural museum and a nature and culture school where families and school classes can take part in practical lessons. On the 40 hectare museum area there are burial mounds from the Stone and Bronze Ages.

The parental home of the mystic Martinus Thomsen in Ulstedbovej has been preserved as a museum and can be visited in the summer months. The autodidact's life's work is a transcript of around ten thousand typewritten pages with the title The Third Testament .

The oldest farm building in the village is the Sindal mill . The brick windmill with two grinding stages and a rolling mill was moved from Fjeldsted to Sindal in 1872.
