Singapore Badminton Association

The Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) is the top national administrative organization in the sport of badminton in Singapore . The association was founded in 1929 as one of the first badminton associations outside Europe . In 1934, the SBA was formed together with the associations of Penang , Perak and Selangor , the Malayan Badminton Association .

In the period before World War II , players like EJ Vass , Koh Keng Siang , Leow Kim Fatt , Tan Chong Tee , SA Durai , Alice Pennefather , Y. Yasuda , Chiong Hiok Chor and Helen Heng dominated the national scene. After 1945, the Singaporean players joined the Malayas Association and made a significant contribution to winning three Thomas Cups . In 1952, 1955 and 1958 the finals of this team championship for men's teams took place in Singapore. Wong Peng Soon , Ong Poh Lim and Ismail Marjan were among the most important players of this time worldwide. In 1983, Wong Shoon Keat won the first gold medal in badminton at the Southeast Asian Games. In 2002 there were the first gold and silver medal wins at the Commonwealth Games.

The association became a member of the Badminton World Federation , then known as the International Badminton Federation , and also a member of the continental umbrella organization Badminton Asia Confederation , then still operating under the name Asian Badminton Confederation .
