The Senses Park - Experience the Bible is a concept of modern Bible interpretation in the form of educational adventure exhibitions or guided time travel. Many parishes have meanwhile adapted the concept to the possibilities for events at their own location.

history

The "Senses Park - Experience the Bible" was created in 2006 from the "Easter Garden" project of the Protestant parish in Linkenheim-Hochstetten near Karlsruhe, which took place there in 2000. For the founders Annette and Lutz Barth, the impetus for the first " Easter Garden" project was a grave and resurrection scene , which was presented as Easter decorations in a planter in the church of Lutz Barth's home town of Stolberg. Due to the great response, they developed the first working material for the Year of the Bible 2003 , with which many other congregations nationwide could also carry out such projects. The Sinnenpark has been part of the missionary work of the Badische Landeskirche since 2005 and has expanded, so that in 2005 and 2006 the Easter Garden took place as a meeting point in Jerusalem in Europa-Park in Rust, and in 2012 it attracted up to 125,000 people at events throughout Germany At times in parallel at over 30 locations, 2011 in Switzerland, 2014 at the State Garden Show. In 2015, a version was created as a "Park of the senses mobile". In the first fifteen years, congregations in over 160 locations in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Spain and England had carried out such sensory projects.

The Senses Park, based in Linkenheim-Hochstetten, consists of a team of employees who continue to develop new topics, for example a new exhibition on the life of the reformer Martin Luther for the Reformation anniversary in 2017 .

concept

The concept follows the approach of experiential education in a Christian context. Here the methodology of experiential education is applied and its dimension is expanded to include a spiritual component. Because the required holism also includes the religious aspects in people, where it comes to questions of meaning and values, to basic questions of humanity about where from and where to. In this context, stimulating experience spaces are created and Christian interpretations are offered.

With the sensory park concept, biblical content is presented in such a way that all senses are included and addressed to visitors in order to lead them to a discussion of the respective topic. Characteristic for all topics are accessible backdrops, elements to hear and interactive offers, while traveling through time and emotions through staged rooms, scents are added and sometimes things can be tasted. By seeing, tasting, touching and smelling, the visitors should be able to experience how people experienced the work of Jesus two millennia ago and how they relate to their own life.

Time travel can be experienced as part of a one-hour guided tour, while adventure exhibitions can be explored on your own and personal focuses can be set at the interactive stations. A staging takes place over a period of two to four weeks, depending on personal and financial capacities.

For interested organizers, there is support for practical implementation on every topic, such as a manual and sound carriers with the audio scenes recorded by actors from Karlsruhe and backed up with music by Dietmar Hess, a soundtrack specialist. Backdrops and props must be produced by the organizer and the technology for light and sound must be purchased. Organizers often make this available to each other.

The “Sinnenpark-Kompakt” has existed since 2019, but one room is sufficient for its presentation. Here the scenery changes, the props are movable and there are also play and audio scenes as well as special scents.

Projects

The following projects on biblical events ( Easter and Christmas as the main festivals of the church year ) and other topics have already been didactically prepared:

Easter garden

In this story, the visitor follows the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem until his resurrection on Easter morning:

A travel companion in historical clothing introduces the situation in the Land of Israel at the beginning of the era through staged rooms and accompanies the visitor to the various stations of Jesus' last days: a walk through a Roman prison, a jubilant reception of Jesus in Jerusalem, the last Passover meal with his disciples, the events on the cross and at the end the walk through the grave into the room that represents the joy of the resurrection.

Christmas time travel Living nativity scene

On this trip the visitor follows a resident of Nazareth to his homeland and to the origin of this Christian festival: the travel companion leads the visitor to his hometown, which begins in the midst of the modern Christmas bustle of an oriental bazaar after a soldier has collected the toll. When you arrive in Nazareth, you discover a scroll with a prophecy on Jesus. The imperial census is announced by a Roman soldier who enters some visitors on the tax list. Joseph and Mary accompany them on the way to Bethlehem and to the shepherds' field at night, where the shepherds learn about God's Son, to whom Mary was announced by an angel. When you arrive at the manger with the shepherds, you can write down your own thoughts, put them in a prepared parcel and give them to Jesus as a gift.

People meet Jesus

A travel companion awaits the visitor in a VIP area and leads in historical garb through the backdrops of popular "very important persons" to Jesus, as a very important person in world history. As a sign that everyone has unhindered "access" to him, the companion removes a cord and clears the way for the other stations: Jesus at his baptism at the Jordan, Jesus healing the sick, Jesus at the wedding in Cana , Jesus calming a storm on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus blessing children, Jesus meeting the greedy and extremely unpleasant tax collector Zacchaeus, who is completely changed by this visit. The path through a tunnel symbolizes the broken hopes and plans of the disciples of Jesus when their Lord dies on the cross. The tunnel leads into a white and gold room of silence with a large resurrection cross, where the visitor can let what he has experienced and is given the opportunity to write down a personal request. Then you go over the red VIP carpet again, which is supposed to signal that you are a VIP in God's eyes.

Hope for the final journey

This non-guided interactive exhibition was created in 2008 and is intended to help deal with death, with one's own finitude, with grief and loss, but also with the Christian hope for heaven and eternal life. First of all, the visitor sees suitcases filled by different people and is confronted with the question of what he himself would pack in a suitcase that he could take with him on his "last trip". At other stations, a treasure chest, a wailing wall or a tear jar invite you to get active yourself. Finally, the visitor comes to the "golden Jerusalem", where possible facets of life in the presence of God on the new earth can be discovered and there is the opportunity to write down your own ideas about expectations from heaven.

The human being Luther - a lively journey through time

A servant of Luther leads the visitor through the scenes and situations of the Reformation events: Luther's childhood and youth and his promise to become a monk; his desperate search for a gracious God in the monastery cell; Preacher of indulgence Tetzel in the market square; the origin of the 95 theses ; the hearing before the Reichstag in Worms ; Luther's work at the Eisenacher Wartburg with the creation of the Luther Bible .
