The Grote of Sint Jacobskerk ( German  Große or Sankt-Jakobs-Kirche ) is the main Protestant parish church in Vlissingen in the Dutch province of Zeeland .

history

The church, which was consecrated to St. James the Elder up until the Reformation , was parish off from West Soubourg around 1320 and developed into a station for pilgrims on the Way of St. James . The construction of today's late Gothic parish church began around 1500, while the church tower and the choir with a 5/8 end were taken over from a previous building from the middle of the 14th century . The completion of today's Vlissinger Jakobskirche took place around 1558, this year can be found in one of the side chapels.

The Jakobskirche is a three-aisled hall church with transept arms protruding over the side aisles. The side aisles continue beyond the transept to the north and south of the choir aisle . This is followed by the simple choir of the previous building without access . The width of the choir corresponds exactly to that of the central nave of the nave and the fore bay. The nave has five bays, of which the first bay in the central nave is taken up by the tower incorporated into the facade of the new building. The side aisles of the nave each have five side chapels. Only these were provided with a groin vault , otherwise there are wooden barrel vaults in the church .

In 1911 the church was badly affected by a fire. Another damage occurred in 1944 as a result of the war. The church was restored to its original state. The parish belongs to the Protestant Church in the Netherlands, which was created in 2004 .

organ

The large gallery organ was built in 1968 by the Flentrop organ building company. Until 1965 there was a large organ made by Van Dam on the gallery, which was built in 1916. The Van Dam organ was damaged during the 1953 storm surge. Today's instrument has 35 registers on three manuals and a pedal .
