Sira Rego (2019)

Sira Abed Rego (born November 20, 1973 in Valencia ) is a Spanish politician of the Izquierda Unida (IU), the United Left. Since July 2, 2019, she has been a member of the European Parliament of the European Left in the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left .

Life

Sira Rego completed an education in the field of nutritional science with a diploma. She then worked as a nutritionist on projects related to food sovereignty and was an employee of a women's cooperative in the field of health.

In the city of Rivas-Vaciamadrid in the autonomous community of Madrid , she was Deputy Mayor under Mayor Pedro del Cura Sánchez from the regional and local elections in Spain in 2015, where she was responsible for the environment , sustainability , urbanism and mobility until June 2019 . She was also the managing director of the Empresa Municipal de la Vivienda (EMV), the association for municipal housing. She is a member of the Partido Comunista de España (PCE), the Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) and Ecologistas en Acción .

Eu Parliament

After the European elections in Spain in 2019 , she became a full member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) and the Petitions Committee (PETI) as well as a deputy member of the Committee on Civil Liberties in the 9th electoral period of the European Parliament beginning July 2, 2019 , Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE).

She was nominated for election as President of the European Parliament by the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left . On July 3, 2019, she received 42 of 662 valid votes in the first and 43 of 667 valid votes in the second ballot. In her group, under the chairmanship of Manon Aubry and Martin Schirdewan , she was elected as one of the four vice-chairs alongside Marisa Matias , João Ferreira and Nikolaj Villumsen .
