The Siuslaw River is a river in Lane County in the US state of Oregon .

It rises in the Oregon Coast Range and flows 177 km into the Pacific Ocean.

geography

The source streams of the Siuslaw River arise west of Eugene , about eight kilometers west of Cottage Grove , another source stream is Lake Creek . Both streams arise above the Willamette Valley in the rain shadow of the Oregon Coast Range. The river flows west-northwest through the mountain range and flows into the Pacific Ocean at Florence .

environment

The river valley was one of the most productive logging areas in Oregon, so the original jungle has been cut down and replaced by secondary forest . In the lower reaches of the Siuslaw River flows through the Siuslaw National Forest .

King and silver salmon are found in the estuary of the river, and the river is also a spawning area for rainbow trout .

Sights and buildings

The 478 m long Siuslaw River Bridge , with which the US Highway 101 crosses the river near Florence, was built in 1936 by Conde McCullough . To the south of the estuary are the Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area .

economy

The river is popular for fishing, although fish stocks have decreased significantly in recent years. There is a marina near Florence.
