The Skienselva forms the lowest section of the Skiensvassdraget river system in the Norwegian Fylke Vestfold og Telemark . The river forms the outflow of Lake Norsjø and then flows through Skien and Porsgrunn . To the north of the Herøya peninsula , it finally flows into the Frierfjord . Its length is about 15 km. The average annual water volume of the Skienselva at the outflow from the Norsjø is 263 m³ / s.
Between Skien and Norsjø, the Skienselva forms part of the Telemark Canal .
In the municipality of Porsgrunn, the river is also known as Porsgrunnselva . This often leads to heated discussions about what the correct name of the river is.
