The Northlands Coliseum is a multi-purpose arena in the Canadian city of Edmonton in the province of Alberta .

history

The arena opened as Northlands Coliseum in 1974 and the Oilers moved from Edmonton Gardens to the new hall. She has had her current name since the middle of the 2003/04 NHL season . The official capacity for ice hockey games is 16,839, slightly less than the 17,100 seats before the 2003/04 season. The arena with 66 luxury suites was named after the pharmaceutical company Rexall Rexall Place in 2003 , the contract on the naming rights ended in 2016. Since then it has been called Northlands Coliseum again.

In front of the arena was a bronze statue depicting the exceptional Canadian player Wayne Gretzky , which the Oilers had erected in 1989 in honor of their former captain. After moving, she now stands in front of the Edmonton Oilers' new home, Rogers Place .

use

Northlands Coliseum was home to the NHL club of the Edmonton Oilers from 1974 to 2016, who moved to the new arena at Rogers Place in September 2016 . At the beginning of the 2007/08 season, the Edmonton Oil Kings , a team from the Canadian Western Hockey League , which belongs to the Oilers, moved into the hall. The Oil Kings will also move to the new building in 2016. The Edmonton Rush from the National Lacrosse League (NLL) used the hall from 2006 to 2015 when the team moved to Saskatoon and renamed the Saskatchewan Rush .

In addition to ice hockey, the event hall was also one of the venues for the Commonwealth Games 1978 and the Summer Universiade 1983. Other events such as wrestling , rodeo and conferences are also held. The arena is also a frequent venue for concerts .

Trivia

  • The ice rink at Northlands Coliseum is considered to be one of the highest quality in the NHL.
  • Although there is only 16,839 spectators in Northlands Coliseum, a volume of 114 decibels was measured during the play-off games of the 2005/06 NHL season against the San Jose Sharks and the Carolina Hurricanes .
  • During those play-offs, only the audience sang the two national anthems O Canada (Canada) and The Star-Spangled Banner (USA). Edmonton's anthem singer Paul Lorieau only intoned the first notes of the Canadian national anthem at the first home game.
  • During play-offs between the Oilers and the Detroit Red Wings , home-team fans tossed a piece of local beef on the ice, a nod to the custom of Red Wings fans to toss a squid onto the field during play-offs .
  • Rexall Place was the only NHL arena in which the players' benches are on the same side of the stadium as the press box, which means that the television images show the backs of the bench players.
  • Rexall Place was, after Madison Square Garden (1968), the second oldest venue in the NHL.
  • The last goal of the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place was achieved by Leon Draisaitl in the last home game of the 2015/16 Regular Season on April 6, 2016 against the Vancouver Canucks to make it 6-2.
