Slim lay

Adrian "Slim" Lay (born December 18, 1923 in Cullman County , Alabama , † 1973 ) was an American country musician and DJ.

Life

Childhood and youth

Lay was born in Alabama and learned to play guitar as a child . Lay had to walk three miles to the nearest school to take guitar lessons. At the age of twelve he won a talent competition and got his own radio show.

Career

Lay later moved to Birmingham , Alabama. In his early career he also appeared as "Arkansas Tex" or "Tex Lay". In Birmingham Lay worked with Happy Wilson and his Golden River Boys on WAPI and founded with Wilson the music publisher Golden River Publishing . A few months later, Lay joined Lost John and his Kentuckians in Atlanta . This group was brought to Nashville , Tennessee , by Bill Monroe , where Lay could be heard with the band on WSIX. By moving to Nashville, Lay made the leap into the national country scene. The Milo Twins hired him as a fiddler and announcer for their appearances in the Grand Ole Opry on WSM .

During the Second World War, Lay was drafted into the US Army and was used in England , France and Germany . During his military service, however, he always found time to entertain the soldiers with music. After his discharge from the army, he returned to Nashville and worked as a background musician for Curly Fox and Texas Ruby . He also had radio shows on WKUL in Cullman , Alabama, on WHOS in Decatur and was a regular guest at the Midway Jamborees in Gadsden .

In Nashville, Lay performed with stars like Milton Estes, Little Jimmy Dickens and George Morgan . Lay's recordings with Artist Records and Delta Records also took place during this period. In 1946, Lay married Christene Vickers in Nashville, with whom he had two children. In 1953, the two settled with their family in Huntsville , Alabama, where Lay owned his own record store Slim's Record Ranch and from 1958 it was on WBHP. He also directed his own record label Cherokee Records , which among others had Curly Putman under contract. Until his death he was regularly represented at various fiddle contests .

Slim Lay died in 1973.
