Knight Sloteko von Ramel (later von Görne ) was court clerk , secular clergyman , canon and provost von Demmin , teacher and pastor of the young margrave Johann , Protonotarius (chief clerk) and Truchseß . In the end he was a companion in the traveling entourage of the Margraves of Brandenburg .

Historical background

The Mark Brandenburg under the Ascanians (around 1320)

Under the rule of the Ascanians , the Mark Brandenburg developed into a territorial state from the middle of the 12th century . Through the establishment of monasteries , contemporary knowledge from culture and agriculture find their way into the newly colonized regions. By clearing new land, can be established on the villages and towns created. In order to rule this territorial state without a capital, the Ascanian court travels with all important court officials through the Margraviate of Brandenburg to take care of official business on site. At the beginning of the 14th century, Knight Sloteko von Ramel was a companion, advisor and witness to this court of the Ascanians for a period of 14 years.

Life

Through the documents left behind, the life of the knight Sloteko von Ramel between the years 1305 and 1317 can be roughly traced. He had not yet received a fief from the margrave. The Ascanian court paid Sloteko's income in the form of income from some service loans , of which only the island of Werder , Trebbin Castle and the Groß Ziethen estate are known.

Knight Sloteko, who was the chief clerk and clergyman at the Ascan court in 1312 , was elevated to the rank of canon of Camin and provost of Demmin by Heinrich von Wacholt , Bishop of Camin in Pomerania , although he was only a secular clergyman . The background to this survey is Sloteko's probable origin from the very influential Holstein-Pomeranian family de Romele ( von Ramel ). From today's perspective, the elevation of a knight, i.e. a soldier in today's sense, to a clerical canon seems strange, but must be seen in the context of the High Middle Ages. As the first manifestation of the idea of a spiritual knightly order , the Knights Templar came into being in 1118; in the Baltic Sea region, the Order of Teutonic Knights in particular became particularly important. For example, serving lay brothers who had taken their vows were called upon to do arms service if necessary.

A war ( North German Margrave War ) against Heinrich II. Of Mecklenburg and against Erich Menwed of Denmark started in 1315 by the margraves Waldemar and Johann , causing important court employees who disapproved of the war to leave the courts of the two margraves. The young Margrave Johann appointed his teacher, pastor and most important advisor, the knight Sloteko, to the secular office of Truchseß , as head of his court. It was not until 1317 that Sloteko and his two brothers received a fief from the Brandenburg Cathedral Chapter , whose name Gorne ( from Görne ) became the name of origin for Sloteko and his brothers.

family

The clear assignment of the knight Sloteko to an original family of Ramel is difficult. In the years from 1305 to 1317 knight Sloteko is only given in documents with his baptismal name (first name) Sloteko, so the family can only be assigned to clues. The rapid rise and career of the knight Sloteko indicate the promotion of one or more influential noble families. The von Ramel can still be found in Holstein in 1233, in West Pomerania in the Anklam area since 1256 and in the Colberg region (Kolberg, Polish Kołobrzeg ) in Pomerania since 1276/77 . With their enfeoffment with the manor Görne, Sloteko and his brothers Zabellus and Ritzardus adopt the new name de Gorne ( from Görne ). When Ritzardus de Romele, later de Gorne, came into the possession of the Dalchow fief near Osterburg in the Altmark, he and his descendants use the family name de Dalchow.
