action

Walter is a contract killer by trade and made a serious mistake in his last job: he shot the wrong man. In order to change his mind, instead of a colleague, he accepts an assignment in a former hotel in nowhere in Russia. There he should meet the gang boss Berger. In fact, on the way there, he meets his former colleague Micky, who has the same goal. When you arrive at the hotel, instead of Berger, you will only find his friend Sibylle, who claims to be "the disco in this area". She alludes to her frivolous zest for life, which is also reflected in her presentation and language. Together they wait for the gang boss and pass the time with alcohol and other drugs . Sibylle accidentally shoots himself with his gun during a boisterous love game with Micky under the influence of alcohol and other drugs. When Berger and his Russian bodyguard Kazik arrive at the hotel, the two killers have removed the traces of the accident. They cannot convincingly convey to their new boss, who is torturing them, that they have no idea of Sibylle's whereabouts.

When Sibylle is found, Berger believes he can blame the mysterious inhabitants of this remote valley, who actually threaten him and his property night after night. He makes his prisoners his employees again and opens fire on any peasant cottages. His own bodyguard knocks him down from behind and takes his place from then on. The whole thing gets scary for Walter and Micky and Walter decides to leave, but is prevented from moving forward by mysterious events in the forest. He then returns to the property. Micky tries to escape with Berger's car, but is shot by Kazik. The eerie and unexplained threats from the forest increase and Kazik and Berger fall victim to them. Now Walter finally leaves the orphaned building and the area and later settles in the USA as an exterminator .

reception

"The actor in the main role is a discovery: Jürgen Rißmann , usually seen in supporting roles (" Die Buddenbrooks "," Maria, he doesn't like it "), plays this Walter with a devoted obduracy."

- Tobias Kessler : Saarbrücker Zeitung

background

In the run-up to the financing of the film, a trailer was shot with those involved in order to convey the later tonality of the film, which could not be read from the script. The trailer, filmed in English over a weekend, was produced by the same people involved in the staff and cast of the later film. Only the role of Berger was played by Paul Faßnacht .

The film Snowman's Land is a co-production of the company noirfilm Filmproduktion GmbH & Co. KG from Karlsruhe with the Südwestrundfunk and Arte Deutschland TV GmbH . The film received funding from MFG Filmförderung , DFFF and FFA . The shooting took place under the working title "Freed Pigs" from February 10, 2009 to March 18, 2009 in Lossburg and the surrounding area and in Karlsruhe. It was shot on HD with the Red One .

The main location was the former clinic of the State Insurance Agency (LVA) in Lossburg . The sanatorium was built from 1912 to 1914 as a rest home for employees of the Breuninger company and was sold to the municipality of Loßburg in 1998. Several investment projects failed and the property stood empty for many years.

The film was brought to German cinemas by the film distributor Zorro Film GmbH. Snowman's Land was shown for the first time on January 22nd, 2010 at the Max Ophüls Preis film festival in Saarbrücken .
