action

Johannes Klare is a charismatic preacher in a free church in Stuttgart, which he leads together with his wife Lydia. Both are role models within the community that is faithful to the Bible. As a natural act of charity, they take in the drug addict street musician Simon, care for him and want to integrate him into their community. Simon's lived homosexuality, with which he sins in the eyes of the Free Church, is to be "healed" with the help of faith. However, Johannes is reminded of his homosexuality, which he has been suppressing since school days. When he finally gives in to his desire, it throws him into conflict with his wife, with his faith, with his conscience and with his role in the community. He struggles to find his way back into his life and wins Lydia's support for it. But he must learn to accept himself and also that he can only live his faith if he can endure the conflict with the orthodox in his church.

Reviews

Although the majority of the film was positively received by the film critics and the audience, it had an extremely poor audience rating. Above all, the moments of surprise in the film that show up everywhere and for which the viewer is not prepared were criticized. On Moviepilot , users rated the film with an average of 7 out of 10 possible points (status: October 19, 2017).

“This hero's journey is meanwhile heavily written and played even more strongly: the gentleness of Johannes Klare and at the same time his relentlessness and uncompromisingness, his restrictive Old Testament view of sin and his life as a sinner, his great sexual energy and his self-denying lifestyle - amazing, how tangible how captivating, how penetrating Selge can depict the inner turmoil of his figure. [...] In doing so, So auf Erden again and again runs the risk of abandoning the boldly observing style in favor of an inappropriately didactic narrative, although this didactic has at least something philosophical here, namely in that it leaves the questions of meaning (also implicitly) unanswered and the viewer like the characters have to endure fundamental contradictions. No stroke of genius about homophobia in the clergy or the Pharisaic lowlands of the petty bourgeoisie - but a valuable, psychologically engaging film anyway. "

“As a clarification of the tolerance requirement and the primacy of conscience in the New Testament, So on earth does its job well - and thanks to the sensitively acting Selge and Walser extends its concern from the limited to the general. [...] This film, knitted like a Bible parable or a religious fairy tale with role-players, achieves its class goal. It conveys certain key messages and is, above all, the drama of a man whose self-discovery means betrayal and faithlessness. The matter does not end with anointing. "

- FAZ

“Drug addiction, homosexuality, broken family relationships, crises of faith - on earth a whole lot of stuff packs up in less than 90 minutes. There are some things that would be worth thinking about longer. But the TV film gives you little opportunity to do so, because the depth and the hectic pace of both the content and the characters are lacking. "

- film-rezensions.de

“A pastor who threatens to break under his own sincerely loved and lived faith: this is interesting material. One should have focused on that instead of taking so many detours. According to ARD information, several participants have had experience in free church congregations, which is why the topic was particularly close to their hearts. […] Conclusion: Good actors, but the story wants too much and gets bogged down. "
