Administrative division
The rural community of Sochos ( Κοινότητα Σωχού Kinótita Sochoú ) based in the town of the same name was founded in 1918. After the renaming in 1940 ( Κοινότητα Σοχού Kinótita Sochoú ) followed in 1946 the elevation to the community ( Δήμος Σοχού Dímos Sochoú ). economy
Gold and silver were mined in and around Sochos from antiquity to the beginning of the 20th century and brought the community a certain wealth. The most important agricultural products in the area today are cereals , sunflowers , tobacco , fodder crops and fruits ; Livestock and forestry are other important industries.
Culture and sights
The Church of St. George , a basilica built around 1770, has been designated a historical monument because of its remarkable wood carving and icons from 1817. The "old tobacco shed" ( Παλαιό Καπνομάγαζο Paleó Kapnomágazo ) was placed under monument protection in 2003. The building from the early 20th century is considered significant for research into architectural development. In addition, it is a historical testimony to the economic growth of Northern Greece through the cultivation and marketing of tobacco.
There is also a small local museum in Sochos, the women's monastery of the "Mother of God Theoskepastos" with a particularly close connection to the Dochiariou monastery in the monastic republic of Athos and the Iliad church.
