The base 940 is a processor socket for AMD's server processor series AMD Opteron , and for the first two Athlon 64 FX processors FX-51 and FX-53rd
Socket 940 was the first socket for AMD's K8 processors . With it HyperTransport , a point-to-point protocol for the processor connection, was introduced.
Socket 940 is intended for servers, workstations and high-end PCs and offers a two-channel memory connection for Registered DDR-SDRAM with optional ECC . Socket 754 (single-channel memory interface) and socket 939 (two-channel memory interface) were intended for entry-level and mid-range PCs based on AMD processors . The Athlon FX series was also introduced on socket 939 from the FX 55 onwards, making socket 940 the exclusive Opteron socket.
With the launch of the Opteron in the new e-stepping on February 14, 2005, the HyperTransport link was raised from 800 to 1000 MHz, which can only be used with the appropriate processors and a suitable mainboard chipset.
Socket 940 was replaced by Socket F as the standard socket for all Opteron processors (with the exception of the Opteron 1xx series) in mid-2006 .
