The base 1 is a processor socket for the Intel i486 processors. It was originally intended as a socket for "Overdrive" processors from Intel , but has developed into the standard socket for i486 motherboards . Only a few i486 "Overdrive" processors were developed by Intel, the Pentium Overdrive required a newer socket, at least the successor socket 2 .

The socket is backwards compatible with the previous socket 486 which had 168 contacts.
