The base 2 was an evolution of socket 1 for the Intel Pentium overdrive and i486 DX4 processors.

Typical chipsets for socket 2 mainboards were the Intel 420 chipset (Saturn I) and the 82C480 from VLSI Technology . Socket 2 motherboards support PCI 2.0 and Fast Page Mode DRAM . To multiply the internal processor clock from the FSB clock , integer multipliers up to 3 × were supported.

The base 2 was replaced by the base 3 , which in addition to the 5  V operating voltage also provided 3.3 volts.
