The base 8 was the only socket for Intel Pentium Pro processors. It is a rectangular SPGA-ZIF design, which was specially developed by Intel for this processor. This made it possible to cache than the second , the place with the chip carrier. With this, Intel achieved a faster connection of the 2nd level cache , the forerunner of the “ cache on die ”, as it is common nowadays due to better manufacturing processes.

The pin distribution of the socket 8 (modified staggered) clearly reflects the different connection of the two dies .

Apart from the Pentium Pro, only Intel Pentium II overdrive processors could be used on socket 8 . Some motherboard manufacturers increased the upgradeability of Pentium Pro motherboards by equipping the motherboards with a slot 1 in which a board with a socket 8 was inserted for operation.

Socket 8 was replaced for the Pentium II by slots 1 , slot 2 and later by socket 370 .
