The base 486 was the first LIF socket designed for Intel - i486 processors.

It was later replaced by socket 1 , which was initially intended as a pure socket for Intel overdrive processors . In contrast to later sockets, the “486” here denotes the processor type and not the number of contacts, as was the case with socket 478, for example .
