The base 4 is a processor socket for receiving Pentium processors by chipmaker Intel .

The base 4 was the first base for Intel's Pentium series. It could be equipped with a 60 MHz or a 66 MHz Pentium processor. In January 1995, Intel also presented an upgrade CPU called Pentium Overdrive PODP5V133 , which could be operated at both 120 MHz and 133 MHz. At that time, Socket 4 had already been replaced by its successor, Socket 5 , which was introduced when the second Pentium generation was introduced with the internal Intel designation P54C. CPUs for socket 4 were never available from third-party manufacturers .
