Socket 423 is the first CPU socket for the Intel Pentium 4 processor. Since this socket only allowed clock frequencies up to 2 GHz due to its electrical design, it was replaced relatively quickly by socket 478 .

With socket 423, Intel used the quad data rate method for the processor bus for the first time , in which four data words were transmitted per clock cycle. This led to the name “FSB 400” at 100 MHz bus clock and the marketing name Quadpumped .
