AM4 is a CPU socket from AMD for the APUs of the Bristol Ridge generation and the Ryzen and Athlon processors in Zen , Zen + and Zen 2 architecture.

It is the first socket from AMD to support DDR4 memory (up to four modules in dual-channel operation). It is compatible with both CPUs and APUs and covers the entire spectrum from low to high end. Accordingly, different chipsets are also available: X570, X470, B550, B450, X370, B350, A320, X300, B300, A300. It has been used for Ryzen CPUs since March 2nd, 2017. The previously planned socket FM3 will be replaced by AM4.

The AM4 is not compatible with previous AMD sockets, which as well as both processors (to be screwed) processor cooler applies. The mainboard's cooler mounting holes form a rectangle of 54 mm × 90 mm (compared to 48 mm × 96 mm for the AM3 + and FM2 +). Conversion kits are available for some cooler models. On the other hand, cooler-fan units that are fastened using straps and clamps are compatible.

Launch

Prefabricated computers with the AM4 socket have been built since September 5, 2016, initially only with Bristol Ridge APUs. Mainboards and processors with AM4 have been offered to end customers since Ryzen was launched on March 2, 2017.
