The base 754 is a processor socket for AMD processors of the AMD Athlon 64 - and AMD Sempron -Baureihen, as well as the mobile processors AMD Turion 64 , and AMD Mobile Sempron .

The base 754 represents a forerunner to the base base 939. It is a modification of the base 940 designed for lower production costs , which was reserved for the Athlon 64 FX and Opteron. In contrast to Socket 940 mainboards , Socket 754 mainboards support:

Since this means that mainboards are only required with 4-layer PCBs (instead of 6 layers), they can be manufactured even more cheaply.

The socket also represents the successor to socket A and was the standard socket for entry-level and mid-range PCs for AMD processors. Socket 939 and Socket 940 were intended for high-end PCs, workstations and servers from AMD .

In contrast to the Socket 939, Socket 754 was produced for the mainstream and notebook sector until the end of 2007. Socket 939 was almost completely replaced by the new socket AM2 at the end of 2006 . The successor to the Socket 754 in the mobile sector is the Socket S1 , which has been available since the second quarter of 2006.
