Socket F is a CPU socket from AMD for the Opteron processor series as well as for the desktop processors of the Quad FX series. Socket F has 1207 land grid array contacts. Socket F is the successor to Socket 940 in the server area.
As a new technology, the socket F supports DDR2-SDRAM as well as processors with the virtualization technology AMD-V . Three 16-bit HyperTransport -Links for the connection of further processors or input / output operation (I / O) are present.
The F socket was introduced in 2006 as a standard socket for servers and high-end workstations and, together with the AM2 socket for mainstream PCs and S1 for notebooks, should form a stable basis for the respective PC categories in the long term. Later it was also used in the short-lived Quad-FX platform in the high-end area for desktop processors.
In mid-2010, base F was replaced by base C32 and base G34 .
Revisions of the base F
All revisions except socket Fr3 require registered DDR2-SDRAM . All revisions except the first require a dual-plane power supply.
