Sofya Gulyak

Sofya Gulyak ( Russian Софья Мейеровна Гуляк Sofja Meijerowna Guljak ; * 1979 in Kazan , Soviet Union ) is a Russian concert pianist. In 2009 Sofya Gulyak became the first woman to win the Leeds Piano Competition . Sofya Gulyak is Professor of Piano at the Royal College of Music in London.

Career

Sofya Gulyak studied at the Kazan Music College before continuing her studies with Elfiya Burnasheva at the Kazan State Conservatory . She graduated with distinction from the École Normale de Musique de Paris . She then continued her studies with Boris Petrushansky at the Incontri col Maestri Academy in Imola , Italy and with Vanessa Latarche at the Royal College of Music in London. She completed her studies in London in 2011 with a diploma.

In 2007 Sofya Gulyak won 1st prize at the William Kapell International Piano Competition in Maryland; In September 2009 Sofya Gulyak was awarded 1st prize and the Princess Mary Gold Medal at the 16th International Leeds Piano Competition . She won many other international music competitions and received first prizes at the Maj Lind Helsinki International Piano Competition , the Tivoli Piano Competition in Copenhagen , the Gyeongnam International Piano Competition in South Korea and the San Marino Piano Competition . She also won a 2nd prize at the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition in Italy and a 3rd prize at the Marguerite Long Piano Competition in Paris.

Sofya Gulyak had recitals and concert appearances at the Teatro alla Scala and the Sala Verdi in Milan , in the Herkulessaal in Munich, in the Salle Cortot, the Salle Gaveau and the Salle Pleyel in Paris, in the Great Concert Hall in the Moscow Conservatory, in the Konzerthaus Berlin , at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, in the Kennedy Center in Washington, in the Palais de Musique in Strasbourg, in the Hong Kong City Hall, in the Shanghai Grand Theater, in the Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, in the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, in the Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro , the Aberdeen Music Hall, the Salle Moliere in Lyon, the Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles, the King Theater in Rabat, the Kursaal in Bern and the Tivoli concert Hall in Copenhagen. She has appeared as a soloist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra , the Finnish Radio Symphony , the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic, the Rio-de-Janeiro Symphony, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra , the Halle Orchestra, the Orchestra of Fondazione Arena di Verona, the Orchestra Filarmonica di Bologna, the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Stavanger Symphony, the German State Philharmonic Rhineland-Palatinate, the Ulster Symphony Orchestra, the Leipzig Philharmonic, the Helsinki Philharmonic, the Orchester National de France. She played under the direction of Vladimir Ashkenazy , Sakari Oramo , Marc Elder, David Hill, Donald Runnicle , Vasily Petrenko , Alan Buribayev , Eiving Gullberg Jensen , Theodor Guschlbauer , Rory McDonald , Danail Rachev , Fabio Mastrangelo , Michele Mariotti and Fuat Mansurov . She took part in the Ruhr Piano Festival, the Chopin Festival in Duzniki-Zdroj, the Festival de Sceaux, the International Keyboard Festival in New York, the International Strasbourg Festival, the Busoni Festival, the Harrogate Festival, the Cracow Piano Festival, the New Zealand Piano Festival, the Liszt Festival at Villa d'Este, the Nordizs festival in Norway, the Ravello Festival and the Chopin Festival in Paris.

Sofya Gulyak was a member of the jury at international piano competitions in Italy, Serbia, France, Greece and the USA. She has also taught master classes in China, Italy, Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines.
