Sohrab Mnazakanjan ( Armenian : Զոհրաբ Հրաչիկի Մնացականյան, born March 20, 1966 in Yerevan , Armenian SSR ) is an Armenian diplomat and the incumbent Foreign Minister of the Republic of Armenia since May 2018. Mnazakanjan previously served as Armenia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations .

Career

Mnazakanjan completed a study visit and internship at the Soviet Embassy in Washington, DC , United States in 1989 . In 1990, at the age of about twenty-four, Mnatsakanyan graduated from the Faculty of International Economic Relations of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations . This was followed a year later by a Masters degree in Western European Politics from the Faculty of Politics, Economics and Social Studies at Victoria University of Manchester in the UK .

From 1991 to 1993 he was a diplomat with the rank of Second Secretary in the European Department of the Armenian Foreign Ministry. Subsequently, he was a diplomat with the rank of second, later first secretary in the Armenian embassy in Great Britain ( London ) until 1997 . At the same time, he was First Secretary of the Embassy in Vatican City from 1995 to 1997, with his residence in London. In 1997 he was the private secretary of the Armenian Prime Minister and from 1997 to 1998 he was chairman of the First European Department, then until 1999 chairman of the European department of the Armenian Foreign Ministry. From 1999 to 2002 he was chairman of the foreign relations department in the Armenian presidential office.

From 2002 to 2008 he was the Armenian Ambassador to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva for the first time . At the same time he acted as the Armenian ambassador to Switzerland during this time . He was then the Armenian Ambassador to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg , France, until 2011 . As Deputy Foreign Minister, he served the Republic of Armenia from 2011 to 2014, before serving again as Ambassador to the United Nations until 2018, this time in New York .

On May 12, 2018, he was appointed Foreign Minister of Armenia by a decree of the Armenian President Armen Zarkissyan .

Private

Mnazakanjan says he speaks the foreign languages English , Russian and French . He is married and has two sons.
