description

Vegetative characteristics

Solanum capsiciforme is a short-lived, upright shrub with soft wood. It is hairy with fine, glandular, simple trichomes on young shoots, the calyxes and the tips of the corolla . The sympodial units are many-leaved.

The young leaves are about 8 cm long and 2 cm wide. Their shape is elongated-lanceolate, the edges are wavy and lobed up to eleven times. The arches of the lobes are weak and rounded, only rarely are they incised more than halfway. Older leaves are linear-lanceolate, 5 to 10 cm long and 0.5 to 1 cm long. They are entire, long-wedge-shaped at the base, the tip is rounded or pointed. The leaf stalks are 0.5 to 1 cm long.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescences are cymes with one to six flowers . They stand in the leaf axils or the forks of the branches on 0 to 10 mm long inflorescence stalks , the rachis is up to 5 mm long. The slender flower stalks are 1 to 2 cm long. The buds are spherical to elliptical, the still closed crown protrudes from the corolla tube at an early stage.

The calyx reaches a length of 2 to 3 mm, the calyx tube becomes 1 to 2 mm long and is covered with 1 mm long, pointed calyx lobes. The crown is purple in color, wheel-shaped and measures 2 to 3 cm in diameter. The corolla lobes are fused together with a fabric that extends beyond the actual tips of the petals, so that the coronet appears somewhat indented.

The stamens are 1 to 2 mm long, the anthers are elongated, strong and stand free and loosely upright. They become 2 to 3 mm long and open via pores at the tips that enlarge into slits. The ovary is hairless and 1 to 1.5 mm long. On it sits a 7 to 8 mm long, pale purple, slightly curved stylus with a heady, slightly widened, pale scar .

Fruits and seeds

On the fruit, the peduncle is slightly curved, the calyx has enlarged a little. The fruit is a 1.5 to 2.5 cm long, conical berry that is colored green when ripe and then falls off along with the stem. Sometimes it is slightly frosted, has little pulp and is richly filled with seeds and stone cells . The 100 to 130 (rarely only 80) seeds are more or less disc-shaped, brown or gray-brown in color and 1.75 to 2 mm long. The surface is finely but conspicuously structured like a net. Most of the 40 stone cells (usually between 30 and 50) are 1 to 1.5 mm in size, only rarely are they larger than 2 cm. They are spherical or have facet- shaped depressions, and they are often attached to the seeds.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 46.

Distribution and locations

The species is widespread in Western Australia and South Australia and grows there in often disturbed locations with less than 550 mm annual precipitation on lime-rich and sandy soils.
