Solanum heterodoxum is a plant from the genus of Solanaceae ( Solanum ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Solanum heterodoxum is a spread-branched, annual , herbaceous plant with a stature height of 30 to 70 cm. It is studded with spines and forms a taproot . The stems are round, green and densely or sparsely haired with sticky, glandular, unbranched trichomes 0.2 to 0.4 mm in length. The spines are awl to arched and are 2 to 8 mm long. If they are awl-shaped, they have a broad base. The sympodial units usually contain two leaves that are slightly in pairs. The shape of the leaf blades ranges from broadly egg-shaped to triangular, they are divided into two pinnate fissures and are usually cupped at the base. The outermost lobes are usually blunt or rounded. The length of the leaf blades reaches 4 to 11 mm. The larger leaf veins are covered with spines, the upper side can be hairy in different ways, usually some straight, simple, non-glandular trichomes up to 0.8 mm in length are also found. The underside is scattered with sessile star-shaped trichomes and short-stalked glands. The leaf stalks are reinforced and about 1/2 to 2/3 as long as the leaf blade.

The inflorescences are between the nodes , are 4 to 10 cm long and consist of five to nine flowers . Before blooming, the buds are inverted ovoid and about 1 cm long. At flowering time is cup cleaved to approximately 2/3 of the length with lanceolate cup corners, the cup tube is bell-shaped and 1.5 to 2.2 mm long. The crown is purple or blue in color and measures 1.0 to 1.7 cm in diameter. It is pentagonal and covered with narrow to wide triangular corolla lobes. The tissue between the individual petals is usually lush and folded. The anthers are tinged with purple, elongated and not visibly inclined, one anthers is only very slightly larger than the others. They reach lengths of 3.5 to 5.0 mm, the upper one is slightly curved inwards. The stamens are yellow and 2 to 4 mm long. The ovary is hairless and close to the calyx tube. It has a 3 to 5 mm long, slender stylus with a heady, 0.3 to 0.6 mm diameter scar .

The fruit is a spherical berry with a diameter of 9 to 12 mm. With age she dries up and jumps up. The calyx enlarges on the fruit and surrounds it. 40 to 70 seeds are formed per fruit . These are dark brown, lens-shaped and about 2.5 to 2.9 mm long, finely pitted and wrinkled.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

distribution

Solanum heterodoxum occurs in two disjoint areas separated by the Chihuahua Desert . The area extends from southwest New Mexico and southeast Arizona to Veracruz .

Systematics

Solanum heterodoxum is classified within the nightshade ( Solanum ) in the subgenus Leptostemonum .
