List of grape varieties
Young plant of the Solaris grape variety

Solaris is a fungus- resistant white wine variety bred in 1975 . Solaris was crossed from the Merzling and Gm 6493 varieties by Norbert Becker at the Freiburg State Viticulture Institute . He is officially marked with the breeding line FR 240-75. Solaris has enjoyed plant variety protection since 2001 .

Descent, origin

Is a cross of Merzling × ( Zarya Severa ♀ × Muscat Ottonel ) vulgo Gm 6493.

Norbert Becker used the parent varieties Merzling as mother and Gm 6493 as father to cross this variety. Gm 6493 (or Geisenheim 6493) was a seedling population that was crossed in 1964 by Vilem Kraus in what was then Czechoslovakia from the grape varieties Zarya Severa × Muscat-Ottonel . Vilem Kraus offered the seedlings to Helmut Becker (1927–1990), who worked at the Geisenheim Research Institute at the time, who recognized the importance of this material and further processed it in breeding in progeny tests.

Norbert Becker erroneously researched the Saperawi Severni grape variety instead of Zarya Severa as the mother variety lings for the seedling population, which was only given the designation Gm 6493 in Geisenheim, when Vilem Kraus was crossed in 1964 . A detailed follow-up research by Norbert Becker's successor Volker Joerger together with colleagues from the Geisenheim research institute was able to reveal the mistake and the true parenthood has now been considered to have been clarified in specialist circles since 2003. However, these findings could no longer be included in the 13th edition of the Taschenbuch der Weinsorten .

The name "Solaris" is derived from the sun, which, due to its strength, helps the variety to ripen early and achieve high sugar production.

Ampelographic features

  • Shoot tip is hairy with white wool.
  • The leaves are large, three-lobed and dark green.
  • The variety flowers very early, but is flower-fast
  • The grapes are medium-sized and have loose berries. Berries are small to medium-sized, yellow-green in color and short-oval.

Maturity: very early

properties

The budding, flowering and beginning of ripening occur very early compared to standard varieties. The frost resistance is considered very good. The location requirements are relatively low, as the variety already has a must weight of 100 degrees Oechsle at the beginning of September . Solaris grows less upright, which makes tacking difficult. Due to the early ripeness, the grapes are endangered by wasps and fruit flies.

Wine

The wines are fruity, fragrant and are matured as dry wines as well as dessert wines.
