action
Maria's father is seriously ill in the hospital. Her mother has come from her home village to be with him. 35-year-old Maria has lived in the city for years and is the only place of refuge for her mother. The mother temporarily moves in with the daughter. Between the two women, however, stands the despotic father, who insults and tortures his wife even at the bedside. Maria actually wanted to study, but this was prevented by her father. Now she works as a cleaning lady in a hotel. She becomes pregnant from her relationship with the truck driver Juan. But Juan develops similar traits as her father and the relationship falls apart. While Maria takes refuge in alcohol, Maria's mother befriends the old neighbor. This is lonely and has his German shepherd as the only confidante. The old woman from the village takes care of the old man and he falls in love with his old days. But between the two stands the mother's sick husband. When he is released from the hospital, his mother has to go back to the village with him. The neighbor remains alone again. He is now looking for closeness to Maria. When she decides not to end her pregnancy, he offers himself as an adoptive grandfather. The child is born and Mary's parents die. Together with the neighbor and her newborn daughter, Maria visits her parents' grave.
Reviews
“A tightly staged melodrama that uses individual fates to illustrate the collective tensions between tradition and modernity. Above all, the impressively drawn and played strong female figures are outstanding. "
