history

Native Americans from the Lenni Lenape tribe originally settled in this area. Especially the tribe of the "Turtle" settled in this area, which was later to be called Solebury Township. The first white settlers, English Quakers , came to the area around 1700 and named the area Solebury in memory of their home region "Soulberry" in Buckinghamshire. At that time around William Penn , Solebury Township was still part of Buckingham Township . In 1686, Solebury was handed over by 13 chiefs to the first white settlers by treaty.

Around 1703 Solebury had 414 acres of land spread over 24 farms.

In the following years the region began to develop. Many mills for grinding grain and processing wood were built on the Delaware River. There were also many homesteads, but limestone and sandstone were also mined.

At the beginning of the 20th century, many American artists such as Edward Redfield or Daniel Garber settled in villages like Lumberville or New Hope on the Delaware River. Over the past few decades, Solebury Township has grown from rural traditional farming (still seen in Carversville today ) into a modern tourist area. Examples are New Hope and Peddler's Village, with its many outlet shops and antique shops.
