Sungatscha ( Russian Сунгача , pinyin : Sōngàchá Hé , also: Songatscha ) is the only outflow of the Chankasee on its northeast bank and forms the border between Russia (on the south side) and up to its confluence with the Ussuri 450 km before its confluence with the Amur of the People's Republic of China .

The length of the Songacha varies between 180 km and a maximum of 212 km - as the crow flies only 80 km - depending on the annual changes in the course of the river bed in the vast swampy Khanka lowlands (Russian Prichankaiskaja nismennost ).

The average width of the meandering river varies from 30 to 60 m, the average depth is between 3 and 3.5 m with a flow speed of around 0.5 m / s. The banks are low and covered with woods and bushes. The floodplain is overgrown with grass and the soil consists of loamy black earth or boggy peat deposits .

The catchment area covers approximately 25,600 km², of which 21,000 km² is on the Russian side. Two tributaries of equal length with a length of 87 km flow on the right Russian side.

The river and its banks offer a rich flora and fauna. Among other things, the Indian lotus flower is native here. It freezes over in November and slowly thaws in March. Thanks to the continental climate, the ice thickness can reach up to 1 m.
