The Soonhope Burn is a stream in the Scottish Council Areas Midlothian and Scottish Borders .

course

The river has its source at a height of around 510 m on the southern slopes of the 588 m high Cardon Law in the Moorfoot Hills . It follows the western slope of the Makeness Kipps in a south-westerly direction and then runs to the south-east before the southern flank of the Makeness Hills . Following the western flank of Dunslair Heights in a southerly direction, the Soonhope Burn leaves the Glentress Forest at Ven Law and enters the Tweed plain on the eastern edge of Peebles . After a run of around seven kilometers, it joins the Tweed from the left. Its mouth height is around 160 m. The Soonhope Burn picks up various small streams on its course.

Surroundings

Various traces of settlement can be found along its course. Of particular note are the ruins of the Shieldgreen Tower , a tower house from the 16th century. On the slopes of Ven Law, the remains of an earlier settlement can be seen on the right bank of the Soonhope Burn. In Peebles, the waters of the Soonhope Burn once powered a mill, the Soonhope Mill . Adjacent is a listed lodge belonging to the Peebles Hydro Hotel . A short distance from its mouth, the Soonhope Burn crosses the grounds of Kerfield House , a listed villa built around 1800 .
