Genre : White berries ( sorbus )
Type : Kordigast whitebeam
Scientific name
Sorbus cordigastensis
N.Mey.

The Kordigast whitebeam ( Sorbus cordigastensis ) is a plant species that belongs to the complex of bastard whitebeam ( Sorbus latifolia agg.). It is a deciduous tree that arose from a hybridization of a species from the group of real whitebeams ( Sorbus aria agg.) With the service tree ( Sorbus torminalis ).

Sennikov and Kurtto have been managing the species under the name Karpatiosorbus cordigastensis since 2017 .

As an apomictic species, it reproduces asexually.

The Kordigast whitebeam is rather rare in the area around the Kordigast with one larger individual (> 1.3 m) per hectare, but occurs more frequently at the edges of the forest. The permanent establishment of rejuvenation is massively impaired by a lack of light, but especially by game browsing. Currently, the total population of the plant is still relatively large and capable of reproduction. However, since not enough young plants can grow, the stock is threatened with extinction in the long term.

History

Information board about the Kordigast whitebeam (located in front of the copy shown in the info box)

The species probably developed before the last ice age. The Kordigast whitebeam was first discovered and described around 1900, but was forgotten again. The biologist Norbert Meyer , who specializes in white berries, rediscovered the plant in 1990 and gave it the scientific name Sorbus cordigastensis, based on its area of distribution . Apart from a few standard methods for describing and classifying the species, no further research was carried out. This changed from May 2008.

The Main Small biology students Matthias cabbage was a lecture by biologist Gregor carrion in the Ecological-Botanical Garden of the University of Bayreuth noticed a copy of Kordigast-Haw, which became interested. In the summer of 2008, more detailed research into the Kordigast whitebeam finally began, led by Gregor Aas in collaboration with Matthias Kohles. So far, in this context, an approval work for the first state examination by Kohles as well as an article in an edition of the Floristic-Sociological Working Group “Tuexenia” have been published.

description

The species is a deciduous and deciduous tree . The stature heights determined so far were between 3 and 7 meters.

The rounded, protruding, toothed leaves are strikingly large on the long shoot. With a width of 8 centimeters, they become around 10 centimeters long. They have a narrow, wedge-shaped leaf base of 90 ° and more and are hardly coarse even in autumn. On the underside they are green-felted, in summer they are fresh green and paper-thin. The flanks of the leaf lobes are curved on both sides and bent outwards; the tips of the lobes are drawn out into distinct awns. The short shoot leaves are narrower, barely lobed, egg-shaped and have a wedge-shaped base with usually less than 90 °. (See also leaf shape )

distribution

The Kordigast flour berry is endemic on Kordigast . It grows exclusively in the local beech and pine forests with lime-rich soils, preferring open spaces or forest edges. A high proportion of pine trees in the stand is beneficial for good regeneration . Beech and hornbeam , on the other hand, are more of a hindrance. Also had a negative effect of deer browsing on the rejuvenation of the kind.

Due to its small distribution area, it is quite rare overall, but is perceived by the Federal Species Protection Ordinance as not endangered and accordingly not particularly protected. With regard to Upper Franconia, it is considered to be potentially at risk based on its frequency . Within Germany, Bavaria has sole responsibility for protecting the species.
