occupation

Sounds and Silence is a documentary about the founder and boss of the music label ECM , Manfred Eicher from 2009.

The film is a production by Recycled TV AG and Biograph Film. In Germany, the film was released in cinemas on October 28, 2010 at Arsenal Filmverleih .

action

The filmmakers Peter Guyer and Norbert Wiedmer follow the boss and ECM label founder Manfred Eicher on his search for sounds, tones and noises. With the camera, they accompany the producer at work, during recordings, live concerts, in the studio and in the office, in large concert halls and small back rooms. They meet artists as diverse as Arvo Pärt , Anouar Brahem , Eleni Karaindrou , Gianluigi Trovesi or Nik Bärtsch . The directors are less interested in a biography of Eicher than in capturing the magical moments of the music.

music

The music in the film comes from artists of the ECM repertoire and ranges from contemporary Arvo Pärt's classical music to Tango Nuevo by Dino Saluzzi to crossover jazz by Nik Bärtsch and much more. In addition to the individual releases by the artists, the soundtrack for the film will be available from autumn 2011 on ECM Records.

reception

Sounds and Silence has been shown at numerous festivals, including the Melbourne International Film Festival 2010, the Solothurn Film Festival 2010, the Viennale 2009, the Hof Film Festival 2009 and the Locarno Film Festival 2009.

Wolfgang Sander writes in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: “The most fascinating parts of the film are those in which you can see and hear how music is made - how the sound is modified when listening to it together in the studio or concert hall, how the piano tuner changes to the sound of Nik Bärtsch enters and prepares the hammers accordingly, how the breaks structure the music, how the composing artist Arvo Pärt and the producing artist Manfred Eicher stimulate each other and with the ideal sound they find, a grandiose-absurd little dance in the church of Tallinn perform. Those looking for action have to be content with scenes like this. Anyone who understands film as a school of hearing will hardly find a better one. "
