The Sovereign was a cruise ship that was last used by the Spanish shipping company Pullmantur .

history

The Sovereign of the Seas was built in 1987 for the shipping company Royal Caribbean International in Saint-Nazaire , France . The float took place on April 4, 1987, the delivery took place on December 19, 1987. At that time, she was the largest passenger ship in the world and is considered a pioneer of today's mega cruise ships. Their home port was Oslo (Norway). On December 21, 1987, she set out on the transfer trip to Miami (Florida), where the ship was christened on January 15, 1988. The next day the first cruise started from there. In 2005 Nassau (Bahamas) became the new home port.

In 2008 the ship was handed over to the Spanish shipping company Pullmantur, a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. On November 7, 2008, the ship was renamed Sovereign . The white paint was retained. Only the chimney now shone in red. In 2013 there was a fundamental change in the paintwork at Pullmantur. From then on, the Sovereign also had a blue hull painting with a blue funnel.

Pullmantur operated an all-inclusive concept. Beer, wine and cocktails were mostly included in the tour price.

In 2018 the Sovereign was used as the filming location for the film adaptation of Sebastian Fitzek's novel “Passenger 23”.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the Sovereign and its sister ship Monarch and the Horizon were temporarily decommissioned in spring 2020 . Due to the impending bankruptcy of Pullmantur Cruises, it was decided that the Sovereign , like the other two ships in the fleet, should not return to service for Pullmantur. On July 23, 2020, the ship was beached next to her sister Monarch for scrapping in Aliağa (Turkey) .

commitment

In her time as Sovereign of the Seas , Royal Caribbean used the ship exclusively in the Caribbean. After being taken over by Pullmantur, there were initially some Brazil cruises in CVC charter. In 2009 the Sovereign came to the Mediterranean for the first time, which from then on was the main area of operation of the ship.

Sister ships

In addition to the Monarch , the Sovereign had another sister ship, the Majesty of the Seas .
